Kizuna Encounter: Super Tag Battle

Review: Kizuna Encounter is considered the sequel to Savage Reign, even though it obviously has a completely different name. (I guess since Savage Reign kinda flopped, they might as well slap on a shiny new name and hope for the best?) Anywho, Kizuna Encounter brings back most of the characters from Savage Reign and adds in a few newcomers as well.

Your chest needs a haircut.

Kizuna Encounter plays like a mix between Art of Fighting and King of Fighters. Along with the new "tag" element, some new defensive maneuvers have been added since Savage Reign, such as dodging/rolling, but the overall gameplay (and animations) still came up short in 1996 when compared to many other 2D fighters. In my opinion, the main flaw in this game is the character roster. Only 12 characters, and they're certainly not the best designs around.

Where's your muscles Tung Fu Rue?

Kizuna Encounter was one of those obscure fighting games that never became all that popular... probably due to the uninspired characters and the fact that the game wasn't all that innovative besides the tag aspect. If you could somehow get past the oddball characters, the gameplay was solid enough to play at least and some quality match-ups could be had. Still, this title couldn't compete to the top fighting games of 1996.

Final Words:

The tag system was decent for the time, but X-men VS Street Fighter was definitely the king of tag-team fighting games in 1996. Even though it was inferior to many other fighters at the time, Kizuna Encounter is an interesting title to check out for the odd characters and cool backgrounds; but there's not much lasting appeal and the gameplay becomes tiresome and repetitive rather fast. ~F.Yagami, Webmaster of TFG
