Chipp Zanuff

BIO:

In his youth, Chipp was addicted to drugs and worked for the Mafia as a buyer. Eventually, his drug dependency worsened to the point where he could no longer perform his job. No longer needed by the Mafia, Chipp was to be disposed of when a ninja, who later became his teacher, rescued him. Chipp began to open up to the man who saved his life, and became his apprentice. But, that peace was short-lived. Eventually, the Mafia killed the ninja. Trembling in anger, he vowed to take revenge on the Mafia. Unable to reach the final rounds in the tournament, he learned that his heart, skills and strength were still lacking, and devoted himself even more to his training. Upon seeing Justice's death, he realized that even the monster that massacred countless people was searching for help. This made him think about what a true helping hand was. It was then that he heard of a Gear that was not a threat to mankind.

Guilty Gear X: Having entered the previous tournament for revenge, during his battles Chipp realizes he lacks the devotion to complete the task at hand, and decides to go back into training. Less than a year later in 2181, when he hears news of a Gear with a bounty, he is ready to go out in search of "that which might truly save him" and focuses his interest on Dizzy's story.

Guilty Gear XX: A few weeks later, Chipp notices that the Guild has been acting pretty strange, and takes the chance to avenge his master. In the first ending, Chipp defeats  Eddie and angers Venom in the process. Chipp wins and spares Venom; he demands answers regarding his master's death but gets nowhere. Chipp realizes that avenging Tsuyoshi's death isn't the answer—if he is to make a difference, he will have to become president.

Guilty Gear Xrd: In the following years, Chipp was travelling around when he came upon a rather lawless area in southern Africa that saw little aid after the Crusades. Chipp managed to restore some level of order and reformed it into the Eastern Chipp Kingdom, with himself as the President. With a population in the tens of thousands, Chipp got his own staff, led by Answer.

By 2187, Chipp is working to get it recognized by the United Nations. When Ramlethal Valentine declares war on humanity, Chipp sets off to fight her alone, hoping that her defeat will bring his fledgling nation recognition. He tells Ky, the High King of Illyria, they cannot team up because the only credit he'll get will be as "some punk". On his way to Japan, Chipp finds May and appoints himself as her chaperone. They confront Ramlethal, but it is too late for anyone: the Cradle is retrieved from Babylon by the Conclave. Chipp leaves May to go investigate Babylon, but the Jellyfish Pirates ask for his help in finding her after she runs away. In Guilty Gear -STRIVE-, Chipp is accompanied by a ninja otter named Dodomezaki.

Chipp is one of the most interesting character evolutions of the series. IMO, Chipp's original design (and GGX version) seemed plain / random... and his animations struck me as "weird". I didn't even like his color scheme or stance very much, at first. In the later GGXX series, his design seemed to be getting somewhere but still paled in comparison to other fighting game ninjas, IMO. (I was all like: "This guy got nothin' on Strider Hiryu." lol.

In Xrd, ASW doubled down on Chipp's original design. I was impressed how much they "cleaned up" his animations and fleshed out his moveset. Chipp's revamp in Xrd fixed most the gripes I had with his design. His Xrd version seemed like ASW was saying: "Here, this is the character we meant to make the first time!" That brings us to Chipp's -STRIVE- incarnation... and HOLY SMOKES! *Raise that TFG rating.* (Done!) Indeed, Chipp's -STRIVE- visual design and moveset immediately made me a fan after playing him. I LOVE his insane moveset & sick combo system. Now, I'd say Chipp is up there with the best fighting game ninjas of all time! Combos while running up the wall??? You Win, Arc System Works! ^_^
