May

BIO:

Having lost her parents at a young age, she was picked up by the pirate Johnny and named May. As she lived the rough life as a chivalrous robber, she began to be charmed by Johnny's kindness and broadmindedness. Ever since, her life has become completely dedicated to Johnny. May was able to reunite with Johnny after the tournament, which filled her with happiness. One day, as Johnny's birthday was nearing, the crew decided to give him a present as a sign of their appreciation. Compelled by her growing feelings for him, she wanted to give him a gift personally, not as part of the crew. The problem was, she didn't have money. Then she learned of the huge bounty put on the Gear.

Since May's debut in the very first Guilty Gear, she was the "cute girl" archetype of her series - pretty much a staple of any 90's fighting game. That said, she always played the role nicely and offered solid diversity from all the other "cool dudes" and "cool gals" of Guilty Gear. A bubbly, adorable pirate girl who fights with a giant anchor that's twice her size? ...nothin' wrong with that. No complaints from me. I like her fishy friends too. Random dolphins and whales in a fighting game make me chuckle.

May's gimmick and comic relief element works for her... and has worked throughout the span of the entire series. It's been fun watching her design become fleshed out more and more throughout XX and Xrd. May's revamped design in Guilty Gear 2020 is a nice new visual spin on her design, although she's like the cute May we all know and love.
