Marvel Vs. Capcom 2 Remaster Discussions Between Capcom and Disney Have Reportedly Begun

In 2009, Digital Eclipse (previously known as Backbone Entertainment) released a well-received digital remaster of Marvel Vs. Capcom 2 on PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 featuring online play the last official port of the pivotal smash hit and still one of the most popular and influential 2D fighting games of all time. In 2015, MVC2 was removed from digital storefronts, making it an even more rare and difficult game for fans to purchase and play in current times. Earlier this year, the #FreeMVC2 hashtag and campaign was started by popular YouTuber and fighting game fan, Maximilian, in hopes to get Capcom and Disney to pay attention to the insane hype MVC2 still generates and possibly rerelease the iconic fighting game on modern consoles.

The good news is... Digital Eclipse is wholeheartedly on board to rerelease / remaster MVC2 for modern consoles (complete with updated rollback netcode and possibly new features) and has since reached out to both Disney and Capcom. Digital Eclipse studio head, Mike Mika, confirmed that the companies have indeed been "paying attention" to the ongoing #FreeMVC2 campaign on Twitter. Mika confirmed that discussions between Disney and Capcom "have begun" to find out what's possible.

Obviously, there have been many changes experienced by both companies over the decade since MVC2 last released on PS3 and Xbox 360. Due to the vast amount of licensing for characters, copyrights, and investments needed for potentially releasing a modern version of MVC2 on Steam, PS5, and/or Xbox Series X|S... it's 100% up to Capcom and Disney to work together again to make this happen.

On that note, a stigma of "bad blood" between the two companies has been speculated in recent years following the low sales and poor fan-reception of 2017's Marvel Vs. Capcom: Infinite which Disney had a lot of influence on regarding the playable roster and how it was handled. MVC: Infinite had a ton of potential, but couldn't gain traction in the highly-competitive esports scene or with casual gamers.

However, Digital Eclipse's Mike Mika doesn't think there's an ongoing grudge or severed relationship between Disney and Capcom, making the point that most employees involved in the 2017 project likely aren't in the same roles today. And if they did happen to still be at either company, they wouldn't continue to fuel hostility all these years later.

"We have begun some discussions and we're trying to see how far we can go. But ultimately, at the end of the day, it's really not up to us," said Mika of Digital Eclipse. "So all we can really do is just make the best case possible and try to make it easy for them (Capcom and Disney), and see if they’re interested."

GamerHubTV posted a video interview with Mike Mika all about the topic and what a modern remaster of MVC2 would entail, which you can watch in its entirety below.

To sum it up... it's now up to Capcom and Disney to play nice and work out an agreement to make a rerelease of Marvel Vs. Capcom 2 even possible. The FGC did its part by making noise on Twitter, and Digital Eclipse is doing their part by being willing to develop a modern remaster and opening the dialogue between Disney and Capcom.

While nothing is confirmed yet... it's definitely great that both companies have recognized the excessive popularity of the recent #FreeMVC2 campaign, as rereleasing MVC2 could be an easy opportunity for both Disney and Capcom to make money without having to do very much at all (and make all of us old school MVC2 players and fans very happy).
