Guilty Gear XX AC+R Sees Massive Surge in Players During Rollback Netcode Beta Test

2012's Guilty Gear XX Accent Core Plus R is currently seeing a major influx of new players thanks to the ongoing rollback netcode beta test happening on Steam. Thanks to Steam stats, we can see exactly how many players we're talking about and how the numbers compare to the current most-played fighting games like TEKKEN 7, Street Fighter V, and Dragon Ball FighterZ. Before the rollback netcode update, GGXXAC+R maxed out at 438 players. During this weekend's rollback beta test, the game has broken its previous record by roughly 2,000 simultaneous players - making it the most-played fighting game on Steam at the moment. (Granted, TEKKEN 7 and Street Fighter V are currently experiencing a major lull due to many players waiting for the next Season's updates to roll out but in any case, we'll take this moment to let Guilty Gear shine.)

These numbers prove that even a classic fighting game implemented with rollback can become competitively popular in today's online FGC - and the players care! With other developers like Bandai Namco recently announcing rollback netcode enhancements for modern fighting games like TEKKEN 7, the future is clearly rollback netcode. And to state the obvious, netcode has become more important than ever to enjoy fighting games competitively with COVID-19 putting all of our favorite FGC events on hiatus.

In layman's terms, Rollback Netcode is designed to predict player inputs and correct latency errors on the spot - a system which has proven to improve the online experience in fighting games, over delay-based netcode.

In related news, SNK also tested a rollback netcode enhancement update for one of their classic 2D fighters, The King of Fighters 2002: Unlimited Match.

[UPDATE] The GGXXAC+R rollback netcode beta on Steam was originally planned to end on Nov. 2nd, but Arc System Works has extended the open beta for 2 weeks now ending on Nov. 16th, 2020. So if you want to jump in and test out the new netcode, there's still plenty of time!
