Street Fighter (1987) - Art Gallery

BY BENGUS

FUN FACTS:  The iconic, high-quality character illustrations for the original Street Fighter (featuring dynamic, gritty renderings of Ryu, Ken, Sagat, and the rest of the cast) were drawn by Bengus (also known as CRMK), an artist who heavily shaped Capcom's visual identity. This artwork was not for a canceled game. While it was released well after the original 1987 arcade game debuted, it was created later as promotional material, strategy guide illustrations, and anniversary art to retroactively flesh out and redefine the visual aesthetic of the cast for fans and subsequent merchandise.

Much of Bengus's definitive character artwork for the original Street Fighter cast (which retroactively fleshed out characters like Birdie, Eagle, Gen, and Joe alongside Ryu and Ken) first saw widespread release in the mid-to-late 1990s. While some pieces debuted alongside later arcade ports or strategy materials earlier in the decade, they became widely popularized through Street Fighter art books, strategy guides, and official company illustration collections published around 1998 to 2001 (such as Capcom Design Works in 2001), long after the original 1987 arcade game's release.
